Of all the claims in support of John McCain's bid for the White House, perhaps none is quite as grand as this. As he arrived in London yesterday, the publishers of his new book insisted the Republican senator's family was descended from the Scottish king, Robert the Bruce.
My great-grandmother "Granny Cook" was Mormon, and spent 50 years working on the family geneaology. I found that I was related to "Simon de Montfort", which caused mixed feelings. But my favorite ancestors, who popped up in two different twigs of the tree, are Mr. and Mrs Odin, Asgard. I am sure Granny Cook would be shocked to know that we were related to gods.
Gods??? Fabulous! It is hard as the article says to trace Scottish ancestry through the middle ages as we were not as good as the English at keeping parish records as there weren't any to speak of. We Scots were just hanging about in the mountains shagging sheep and drinking whiskey...no time for silly record keeping or marriage/birth certificates! People who want to claim ancestry always pick the 'heroes'.
